Notes

Kyoto is Kyoto Prefecture's largest city, making up 56.6% of the prefecture's population. It was established as Heian-kyo, the ancient capital of Japan for about 1080 years until Emperor Meiji decided to move to Tokyo. Because it was home to the imperial family and court nobles, Kyoto is also given the elegant name "Sennen no Miyako"(capital of a 1000 years). During the Heian era and closing days of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the Edo era, Kyoto played a major role as one of the centers of politics of Japan. With its countless temples and shrines, ancient sites, and quaint streets, Kyoto is also a tourist city with diverse historical cultures and festivals related to religion, aristocrats, samurai, and ordinary people draw visitors from both inside and outside Japan. Moreover, it is also an academic city dotted with many universities such as Kyoto University, the former imperial university, gathering students and researchers from inside and outside the country.
