Story

Aimi Okusaki (24) is tired of life in Tokyo, and returns to her hometown of Hiroshima after six years. Her grandfather operates a movie theater, but it will soon close after encountering financial difficulties.
The day before they give up on the theater, a man from Tokyo named Tokuzawa appears. Tokuzawa says that a long time ago, the Carp (baseball team) had no money, but they used their wits to survive. He proposes various ideas to revive the movie theater while telling old stories about the Carp. The troubled Aimi and people from the neighborhood shops are moved by these episodes of the past.
After the war, the impoverished local baseball team had no big corporate sponsors, but they came up with ideas that had never been thought of before, and were able to completely overcome the crisis and grow. Character Tokui learns the stories about the desperate and sometimes comical efforts of Hiroshima’s residents alongside the Carp. In those days, the Carp were a small hope created in a town that had nothing left after being bombed. As Aimi and the movie theater begin to improve due to Tokuzawa’s bold proposals, things begin to change for those working in the neighborhood shops. Just when it seems that business is beginning to return to the movie theater, Tokuzawa suddenly disappears. One of the friends of the shopping district looks into it, finding that Tokuzawa wasn’t actually an official from the government’s ministry of trade. The flabbergasted Aimi and company begin to gradually realize the actual reasons for which he came.

Notes

Facing the Seto Inland Sea, Hiroshima is a city of 1,190,000 people in the center of a delta intersected by six rivers. Many tourists from across Japan and the world come to visit the two world heritage sites, Genbaku Dome and Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima (next to Hatsukaichi City), and for the rich food culture that includes oysters and okonomiyaki. The Hiroshima Carp began as a local baseball team for the city, which was in a state of ruin from the atomic bomb. The city and the team grew together, with residents entrusting their hopes and dreams with the team, which served as a symbol of reconstruction. Now, with reconstruction complete and the city functioning as a central hub for commerce and culture in western Japan, Hiroshima is a symbol for international peace and culture, and sends this message of peace throughout the world.
