Notes

The town of Yanaizu is located in the western part of the Aizu region in Fukushima Prefecture. It is a temple town that thrives as the home of Kokuzo Bosatsu at Enozoji Temple, which boasts 2,000 years of history. Traditional events have been held here since long ago, including the Nanokado Naked Temple Visit, a Children’s Parade, and more. As a temple town, all the buildings were constructed centuries ago, and they have been transformed into onsen hot springs, turning Yanaizu into an onsen resort town. The town of Yanaizu is also the birthplace of Akabeko, the legendary originating from the red-haired cattle who worked to transport heavy materials when Enzoji Temple was constructed. In addition, Nishiyama Onsen has been operating for 1,300 years. Legend has it that all of one’s sicknesses will be healed by bathing in the onsen’s eight different water sources. It is a little-known hot spring still used by believers who consider it a hidden spring of the gods.
